THE VIEW FROM THIS SIDE

Blue

A look at the Corporate Blue era, 1967 to 1986.
All modern traction, necessarily, but in a timescape that many of us ignored. The selection is in fairly strict chronological order. The geography is a little selective, but the show starts off with a 33 and 4TC set at Poole in all over blue, followed by Elgin with a pair of very drab looking DMUs crossing on the Inverness service. Rhymney, Merthyr, (more plain blue DMUs),  Bristol Parkway, Appleby, follow and then Hellifield before it was all restored. There's much of the Crewe-Shrewsbury line, plus Chester, the Cambrian, odd sets of pictures of Derby, Sleaford, the Midland Main Line, Burton on Trent, the Standedge route, Kirkham & Wesham and as an oddity - Clarbeston Road. Machinery besides DMUs and an odd 503 EMU includes the necessary 20s, 25s, 31s, 33s, 37s, 40s, 45s, 46s 47s and a solitary 56. Alas, no Deltics - all my colour pictures of these are when they were Green. No 50s either, these are in other shows. Nice to see though are the revival years of the Cambrian Coast Express, a 45 at Burton on an absolutely stupendous 14 coach relief (where only 5 car Voyagers now dare to tread), a 46 with steam heating very working at Nantwich, (all buildings present and correct) and the Jolly Fisherman at Derby and Sleaford with the regulation class 20s. 80 pictures.

A small number of the pictures in this show also appear in others.

Samples from this show. These images are compressed. Actual images on the CD are high resolution:-

Glan Dyfi, 15th July 1978. 25263 and 25325 about 15 late with the 1040 Euston-Aberystwyth. The train is seen skirting the estuary, with two of the well-known local fishing coracles in the foreground.

Elgin, 28th May 1968. DMUs operating the Aberdeen-Inverness service, displaying what a drab unimaginative livery scheme can look like if you really put your mind to it…..

Settle Junction, 31st May 1975. A Lancaster to Leeds DMU nearing the junction with the Settle-Carlisle route.

Wrenbury , 20th September 1986. One of the Mossend to Severn Tunnel Jn steel trains that used to carry coiled steel sheet from Ravenscraig steelworks to Llanwern. These ran twice per day, and were usually worked by pairs of class 37s. 37020 and 37101 attack the 1 in 230 shortly after passing Wrenbury. The little station can just be seen under the bridge arch.

Burton on Trent, 4th July 1981. 45041 and an enormous summer extra to Paignton, 14 vehicles no less.
Difficult to imagine now - 4 or 5 car Voyager sets are the norm, catering for more passengers……..

Greenfield, 26th March 1982. 40092 and an Eastbound tanker train.
