Return
to The Strong Country
More
of the Former LSW route from London to Bournemouth and Weymouth,
plus
other locations in the area and the Isle of Wight.
This
is a companion volume to the well - received 'A Wessex Journey' CD.
Starts
of with Elder Dempster Lines making a sulphurous exit from Waterloo
on a very gloomy November day, then moves Brockenhurst, Lymington and then
the Isle of Wight 1965/66 - this includes views of the Cowes line.
Other
locations and scenes are pretty much as per the general coverage of the
Wessex Journey presentation, ie 1965-67, but do not appear on that show
- eg Bournemouth, Swanage branch, Bincombe, Weymouth, yet more of the Quay
branch and just a little bit of the Somerset and Dorset. Castle Cary on
the 'other' route from London to Exeter appears, with Lamport and Holt
Line on a special. Otherwise, the usual locomotivity appears. As a
final flourish, the Winchester to Alton line is visited, (with DEMUs) in
1972 before it closed as a through route and whilst the 'Watercress Line'
was still a dream.
Samples from this show. These images are compressed. Actual images on the CD are high resolution:-
‘’YOU ARE GOING TO THE
STRONG COUNTRY”. So said endless advertisement hoardings by the lineside
on the LSWR main line out of Waterloo. The reference was actually to Messrs
Strong’s of Romsey, noted brewers but whose distinctive products (and marketing
ploy) have long been assimilated into one of the large brewery undertakings.
On 5th November 1966, 35030 Elder Dempster Lines makes a start
for the aforesaid Strong Country out of Waterloo with the 1030 to Weymouth.
Wishing Well Halt, 22nd
April 1967. 34008 Padstow passing the long-closed platforms with
the 0925 Weymouth to Waterloo. This is very near the end of SR steam, note
the scattering of spectators on the cutting sides.
Cowes, Isle of Wight,
12th June 1965. No. 22 Brading immediately after arrival with the
1235 from Ryde Pier.
