Sprinters and Pacers
This stuff covers 1986-1991 (plus a bit of 1994) and is now archive material. Includes 150/0, 150/1, 150/2, 151, 153, 154, 155, 156, 158, 141, 142, 143, 144 when they were all still fairly new. The original prototype 150/0s and the Met-Cam 151 units are notable - it seems there are not a lot of pictures to be found of either of these. Locations are variously in the Midlands/North West/Yorkshire/Cambrian/the Marches plus Edinburgh, Glasgow and an odd shot at Perth. 79 views.
One of the pictures in this show also appears in West Medlands and Wales.
Samples from this show. These images are compressed. Actual images on the CD are high resolution:-
Derby,
2nd May 1986. Concurrent with the introduction of the BREL built sprinter
units, two other 3-car units were delivered by Metro-Cammell for evaluation,
these were classified 151. The second of the two forms the 1340 to Matlock.
The 151s were not as successful as their BREL counterparts and did not
see much of the 1990s, having spent much of their lives in store.
Llandudno,
16th June 1990. Compare us if you will… 150 214 had just arrived from Chester,
150 103 alongside is the shuttle to the Junction. The station here was
once a large, prestigious affair, but by this time was roofless and almost
derelict.
Leeds, 21st September 1989. The 1158 to Knaresborough is about to be be performed by 141 103. Someone produced this from a clean sheet of paper, but the West Yorkshire PTE were said to be less than impressed with the some of the stock that they had inherited. The 141s were an early Leyland foray into train building - in service from 1984 they were dubbed ‘Tonka Trains’ in some quarters.....
Preston, 25th April 1992.
A former ‘Skipper’ banished to the frozen north from the west of England.
142 015, still sporting chocolate and cream livery, working the 1214 Blackpool
South to Colne.
Edinburgh, 11th February
1991. In weather conditions that would probably totally incapacitate the
UK south of the border, 156 501 in Strathclyde PTE colours has just arrived
on a Glasgow via Shotts service. A 150/2 lurks to the right.
Nantwich, May 1991. 158
761 calls. It is working the 1719 local from Crewe to Shrewsbury, a service
once used daily by the author and much missed by commuters to Crewe and
beyond after its inexplicable cessation soon after this view.... We're
still waiting by the way.
