THE VIEW FROM THIS SIDE

The Silver Age
1977 in Black and White.

This slide show is rather different to the other shows in the series.
To start with, the content is entirely monochrome, drawn from material shot in the year 1977 only, and featuring contemporary ‘modern traction’ only – ie it is BR, non steam.
There are 180 different views in the presentation, the locations and subject matter is too varied to give a full narrative description here, but of note there are HSTs when they were very, very new (one is seen on test ex Crewe still in works primer), unusual items appearing include 50 036 (the last to be put through Crewe works?), the prototype HST class 252 power cars, a 37 at Knucklas (normally a prohibited route for locos at this time), Toton with the most of the yards still working and still busy, D1023 on a class 52 farewell tour, 74 003 at Brockenhurst with a special, and Newark on the ECML before the masts went up – did anyone else take pictures here at this time? There’s odd bits of lineside interest like the closure notices found still pasted onto the booking office door at Armathwaite, and a brick wall full of early 20th century advertising art at Etruria.
The show begins with a prologue to set the timescape (it was Jubilee Year), and then access into the show is via a menu of Chapters describing the broad geographical areas covered by the show. At the end of each chapter the option is given to return to the front menu or continue.
In common with all of the Slide Shows that we produce, the accent is not on locomotivity, rather on the broad scene. However we do appreciate that motive power identities are sometimes of particular interest to potential customers and as an aid we have a listing of some items of machinery appearing on this show.

The price for this 180 slide presentation is £19.95.

Samples from this show. These images are compressed. Actual images on the CD are high resolution:-

Stoke on Trent, 30th September 1977. 304 009, all four cars of it, forming the 1043 Manchester Piccadilly to Stafford service. The gas holder at the old Etruria Gas Works is visible in the background.

Armathwaite, 17th February 1977. 25 107 seen on the northern reaches of the Settle & Carlisle, soon after crossing the viaduct with the1050 Carlisle to Healey Mills freight.

Brockenhurst, 3rd December 1977. 74 003 about to leave with a special organised by the Diesel and Electric Group, and Railway Pictorial Publications, to mark the imminent demise of the class. This loco was in fact a substitute, classmate 74 005 had failed earlier at Romsey.

Greenholme, 1st May 1977. 87 014 sweeps around the bend with the 1645 Liverpool Lime St. to Glasgow Central. Hmmm.....  Think about it.

Toton, 31st October 1977. 44 008 'Penyghent' runs low level with an up mineral train, mostly a mix of 24.5t hoppers and flat bottom vehicles. The layout of the once vast yards is still virtually intact in this view.

Newark, 26th November 1977. 55 022 'Royal Scots Grey', a suitable exhaust and the 0800 Kings Cross-Edinburgh, just about to pass the remains of the old brewery.
