North. Part 1.
The locations are generally
in the North West of England, 1966 to 1969. The West Coast Main Line locations
include Preston, Carnforth, Penrith, Carlisle with just a couple of views
of Shap Wells, one is with 'Scotsman' , the other is of a pair of
class 50s. There are many views around Manchester, including Central station,
Buxton and Stalybridge. There are a few diesel traction views that also
appear in the Green show.
Locomotive types seen
are the inevitable 8Fs and Black 5s, quite a few Britannias, the identities
of some of these have been lost and now have to be guessed at, but of note
there is a splendidly leaking 70042 Lord Roberts that has been digitally
rescued and can now be seen for the first time in 35 years leaving Carlisle
with the morning Crewe - Perth train. There is also the odd Ivatt 'Pig'
and 'Micky Mouse'. Contemporary diesel and electric types are included,
mention should be made of shots of Millers Dale and Buxton with an 'Airfix'
4w railbus optimistically waiting for customers, and Oxford Road with ancient
but very efficient MSJA EMUS present.
Samples from this show. These images are compressed. Actual images on the CD are high resolution:-
Manchester
Central 25th July 1966. Black 5 4-6-0 45448 has the 1712 to Cheadle Heath
and the non-corridor stock to prove it. The DMU is forming the 1709 to
Chester Northgate.
Penrith 12th August 1967.
70032 Tennyson gets away from the pw slack, the train is the 1328
Glasgow to Morecambe. The fireman is obviously busy, and the heads are
bristling from the windows - a good run up Shap is in view.
Millers Dale, 22nd January 1966. A single unit railbus waiting, hopefully, for someone to swap over the tail lamp, (a redundant item if ever there was one), and possible passengers. It will form the 1322 to Buxton. The platform buildings would have effectively screened this little train from anyone alighting from a main line train and actually wanting to get to Buxton - today all that is left is a landscaped mound, but a little foraging in the undergrowth can sometimes be rewarding as well as sobering.
Carlisle, 19th February 1966. 4-6-2 70042 Lord Roberts making a very leaky departure with the 0925 Crewe to Perth train. 70042 lasted out until until the following May, finally being broken up at McWilliams’s scrapyard, Shettleston. Unseen for 35 years, this looks really great on a big screen - an atmospheric, doom laden portrait of a dying giant.
Stalybridge, 2nd October 1966. This is what a 'Brit' looked like when it
was clean and with all the plumbing fixed. Captured merely by chance during
a journey from York to Manchester one Sunday morning, 70004 William
Shakespeare passes with an SLS Special. The livery is rather strange
- not quite Brunswick Green, and with solid black lining. Items of note
in view are the weighing machine on the platform (right) and the remains
of the overline signalbox girder work (above).
Manchester Victoria, 22nd
July 1967. Black 5 45208 leaves with the 0950 Llandudno - Leeds,
and another similar machine is giving a helpful shove at the rear end,
unseen. The purpose in life of the 47 (right) is not recorded. The
World War II bomb damage is very clear. The other end of the station had
also been badly hit, but the damage was more or less disguised rather than
just left as here.
