THE VIEW FROM THIS SIDE

Narrow Gauge Railways in Wales, 1966-1976

The title is self descriptive. Lines visited are the Ffestiniog, Talyllyn, Vales of Rheidol, Welshpool and Llanfair and Snowdon Mountain. The accent is on 'the way we were' years, before 'Railway Heritage' became a fashionable phrase and before it all became the rather more serious business that it all seems to be today.
Notable items include Dduallt when the spiral was only just being started, the former Corris Railway building at Machynlleth when it was still a BR affair, the Vale of Rheidol on its old formation in Aberystwyth, 'Monarch' working a train on the W&Ll, some interesting pictures of the last bit of track in Welshpool town (with modern comparisons), and a lovely picture at Dolgoch with the train taking water whilst a shepherd on horseback drives sheep under the bridge. 79 views plus 2 comparisons.
Note that 3 pictures from this also appear on the West Midlands and Wales cd.

Samples from this show. These images are compressed. Actual images on the CD are high resolution:-

Tanybwlch, Ffestiniog Railway, 27th May 1966. Ice creams are on sale in the station cottage. The few passengers gather for the return trip to Porthmadog,  and there’s not a stick of platform furniture in sight.

Dduallt, Ffestiniog Railway, 13th May 1970. ‘Mountaineer’  ready to return South, having round round its train. The spiral is under construction in the background. At this time Dduallt, with no external access save footpaths through rough country, was the terminus whilst the deviation was built to enable the railway to regain Blaenau.

Abergynolwyn, Talyllyn Railway, 25th May 1966. This was a far as the line went in these days. No 6 ‘Douglas’ has just arrived with the1315 from Tywyn. Nice Humber to right, (opinion is divided, we are told it may be a Hillman). Note too the refreshment/souvenir coach, and how few passengers….

Near Halfway, Snowdon Mountain Railway, 13th August 1971.  An ascending train nearing the halfway passing place. Walkers take a breather and perhaps reconsider their ambitions, this spot being where the unprepared tend to sit down and have a think….

Castle Caereinion, Welshpool & Llanfair Railway, 10th July 1967. ‘The Earl’’  crossing the B4385 road. Note the traditional cast ‘Trains Cross Here’ signs, and the absence of any other road markings or warnings. The road scarcely looks wide enough for the waiting Rover, let alone today’s vehicles.

Devils Bridge, Vale of Rheidol Railway (BR), 12th July 1967. No 8 ‘Llywelyn’ pounding up the 1 in 50 near the terminus, the train is the 1000 from Aberystwyth.....
