THE VIEW FROM THIS SIDE ?
Many years ago, if you took photographs on colour slide film and sent them off for processing to a certain well known laboratory, you would receive them back a week or so later, all mounted in nice little cardboard sandwiches that each had an instruction at the top which said 'VIEW FROM THIS SIDE'.
This is THE VIEW FROM THIS SIDE.

Then again, all of these images in this collection were taken in the 60s and 70s in a world that has changed almost beyond recognition, and which is now on another side of our collective social and industrial history.
This is THE VIEW FROM THIS SIDE.

But the images could just be pictures of how things were, then, seen from the photographer's side of the camera.
Perhaps for this reason more than anything else -
This is THE VIEW FROM THIS SIDE.

THE VIEW FROM THIS SIDE is drawn from the collection of photographs built up by Bill Chapman from the mid 1960s onwards. Although the images were originally created purely as personal records, they have, over the passage of time, assumed a significance and dimension that is totally beyond anything that the author had in mind when he made them. This has mainly to do with the unique manner in which Photography deals with actuality and absolutes. The result has been that in recent years items from the collection have enjoyed demand from publishers, journalists, the public and scholars alike, as they provide a source of recorded reality from a time not so distant, but nevertheless far removed.

Many of these images are now available to an even wider audience, packaged as digital slide shows in CDRom and DVD formats.
