THE VIEW FROM THIS SIDE

Germany

Shot between 1969 and 1973. The areas and lines covered are the Mosel Valley, Rheine-Emden, Neuenmarkt-Hof, Heideleberg-Heibronn, the Black Forest and the odd view of the far North.
A good selection of locomotive types then running include the inevitable 01.10 and 001 pacifics, 050 and 043 2-10-0s etc., plus a token diesel, this is a V200 (the original on which the BR 'Warships' were based).
Of special note are 038 (Prussian P8) 4-6-0s in the Black Forest, an 078 Baltic tank (Prussian T18), an 065 2-8-4T on the Eberbach-Darmstadt line, an East German 01.5 Pacific at Hamburg Altona on the morning Berlin express, huge freights on the Emden line and a lot of coverage of the Shiefe Ebene incline, which was like Shap, Rattery and the Lickey all rolled into one.

Samples from this show. These images are compressed. Actual images on the CD are high resolution:-

Ellbergen 15th September 1972. On the Rheine to Norddeich line in the North West. 3 cyl 2-10-0 044.267 tries to darken the sky as she heads for the Ruhr with a massive freight from the docks at Emden.

Emden West, (Later renamed Emden Hbf) 9th September 1969. 3 cylinder oil burning 0110  pacific 012.057 and the 1037 Norddeich to Köln.

Neuenmarkt Wirsberg 21st September 1971. In an isolated bit of Bavaria that used to be almost surrounded by East Germany, we have the big stuff. 2 cylinder rebuilt 01 coal fired pacific 001.187 calls with the 1131 Lichtenfels to Hof local. The banker is at extreme left background, for the climb to Marktschorgast, but its services will neither be offered nor needed for such an equipage as this.

Eberbach, 14th September 1970. 2-8-4T 065 014 catches the glint, leaving about 45 min. late with the 1724 to Darmstadt. This cross country route through the hills was very reminiscent of the Somerset and Dorset but with even fewer trains (about 4 each way). The 065s were difficult to find by this time, this was their only regular work.

Geeste, 15th September 1972. Another class 043 3 cylinder 2-10-0 roars a coal train to the docks at Emden. This little station was about 40km North of Rheine.

Heidelberg-Heibronn-Crailsheim. This succession of routes  received less attention than many others, but nevertheless remained largely steam until electrification in the early 70s. At Heidelberg, 13th May 1971, 2-6-2 023 030 is at the head of the 1128 to Heilbronn. A railbus is in the far background, and the advertising board to right reminds everyone of the American post war influence.
